Too often when faced with a problem we all make the mistake of reacting to what we are faced with instead of slowing everything down and responding to the challenge. We will explore in practical terms how this can be done, especially when the pressure is on and timelines tight and draw on the experiences of the group and facilitator on how this has been done.

Part and parcel of reacting to a problem as it presents itself is this sense that we need to act immediately and fix it as quickly as possible. The temptation is therefore always to jump into solution mode before first truly understanding what the problem is. This can result in us solving the presenting problem rather than the real problem. For this reason, we need to properly understand the problem and have the right tools to interrogate it.

When you get to the final phase of problem solving the number and variety of possible solutions can be overwhelming so having the objective means to assess which solution is the best one for the situation is critical to help you determine how to move forward and also how to sell this solution up the line in your business so you get the necessary buy-in and sign off.
